Founded by Rao Bika in1486, Bikaner is situated in northwest end of the Rajasthan state in northern India and it enjoys the status ‘administrative headquarters’ of Bikaner District. The city is about 330 kilometres far away from the state capital-Jaipur. It is the fifth largest city of Rajasthan. Bikaner is home for the mining industries, Gypsum, plaster of Paris and bentonite. Crops such as mustard, cotton, groundnuts, vegetables and wheat are grown here with the support of The Ganges canal and Indira Gandhi Canal, which are the major water resources of Bikaner city. The city is the centre for Usta Art, which includes the designing of floral and geometric patterned objects with gold.

Bikaner is also famous for its camel research farm (NRCC), Bikaneri Bhujia (a spicy snack cooked with moth dal, spices and edible oil) wool production, PATA culture and sweets. The city is also well-known for its intricately carved Jharokas, handicrafts and leather articles.

As Bikaner is lies in the middle of the Thar Desert, it mainly witnesses a hot climate with extreme temperatures. During summer time, the temperatures will exceed 50 °C, and in the winter season they may fall below freezing.
